What “Self-Driving” Actually Means
The SAE levels are the global standard. Most consumer systems today are still Level 2. True robotaxis operate at Level 4 — within carefully defined areas.
Level 5 does not yet exist commercially. Headlines often conflate Level 2 supervised systems with true driverless capability.

When and how will we stop driving?
Gradual, uneven, and incomplete — like horses to cars. We won’t flip a switch.
FSD & equivalents standard. Waymo/Zoox/Tesla expand L4 robotaxis in major metros. Cybercab production ramps. Industrial autonomy accelerates fast.
Dense, reliable networks make ownership optional for many urban trips. Personal L3 highway systems improve. Industrial sites largely autonomous.
Shared fleets dominate routine trips. Personal driving remains for rural, enthusiasts, classics, and preference. Cities redesign for pick-up/drop-off.
Manual driving persists for fun, off-road, emergencies, sparse areas — like sailing or horseback today. “Driving” becomes optional lifestyle choice.
“Stopping driving” misframes passenger cars. The shift is fromownership + manual toon-demand mobility for most trips. Heavy machinery already proves the model: autonomy wins where jobs are repetitive, dangerous, and costly to staff.
Straight Answers to Real Questions
Is Tesla FSD safe today?
Significantly improved with v12–v14 neural nets. Strong aggregate stats reported, but incidents occur and attract scrutiny. Still Level 2 — driver is responsible. Excellent co-pilot; not set-and-forget.
When will Cybercab drive unsupervised at scale?
Targeted late 2026 / 2027 with gradual expansion. Vehicle production is underway. The bottleneck is safety validation and multi-jurisdiction regulatory acceptance.
Will truck drivers lose their jobs?
Long-haul on predictable routes faces earlier disruption. Local delivery is harder. New roles in oversight, remote ops, AV maintenance will appear. 10–20 year transition with big regional variation.
Why is mining/warehousing further along?
Structured environments, massive immediate ROI on safety & productivity, lower regulatory hurdles (private land), repetitive tasks. Public roads are far more complex and adversarial.
Can I still own and drive my own car in 2035?
Yes — especially if you enjoy it. For many daily trips, robotaxis will be cheaper and easier. Ownership shifts from necessity to choice or hobby for many people.
